Can Tow Bar Only Have Vertical Swivel Points At Bumper Connection

Question:

I noticed that some applications for mounting tow bars to bumpers have a horizontal swivel point like this adapter #BX88296. I was under the impression that the horizontal pivot point it the hitch itself. Is there anything wrong with only having a vertical mount point connecting the bumper to the tow bar? Thanks for your advice.

Most tow bar connections will have a side-to-side pivot mechanism where it attaches to the towed vehicle to help with control and comfort during travel such as with the Demco Commander II # DM9511012 that you were looking at.

There are some, while we don't have them available, that do have a more rigid connection like what you're describing. These are generally more cost-efficient and tend to create a rougher ride. Typically tow bars like these will also have a lower speed limit that needs to be followed. There isn't anything wrong with this type of connection in terms of safety but it's something you might end up wishing you had upgraded while traveling down the highway.

Because of this I do recommend going with a more premium tow bar like the Commander, especially if you plan on towing your vehicle more than once or twice. If you can tell me what model vehicle you have I will be happy to recommend specific base plates that will be compatible with the Commander.
