Sway Control and Weight Distribution Recommendation for 1,800 lb Pop Up Camper
Question:
Hello, Looking for a recommended weight and anti sway hitch for my 1991 Starcraft starflyer. Dry is roughly 1200lbs and I’m towing it with a 2012 Nissan Xterra. We do a lot of winding road driving and SoCal driving. These pop ups have a tendency to bounce all over the place. Again dry 1200 more like 18-2200 loaded. Thanks

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.
For a trailer that will weigh a total of 1,800 lbs you'd be looking at a loaded tongue weight of between 180 and 270 lbs so for a weight distribution system with sway control I would recommend the Equal-i-zer kit part # EQ37040ET as this will work great with your tongue weight range, is considered by most to be the best weight distribution system available so it will work really well and be very safe, and has a 4 point sway control system that's also very effective and safe.
