The normal operating temperature for the transmission fluid will vary by vehicle and ambient temperature. Therefore, I don't really have an exact figure for you to go by but the manufacturer may be able to give you more information on what the acceptable range is. That said, this temperature will be increased while towing due to the added strain the trailer has on the vehicle's transmission but a good rule of thumb is to be around 195 but no more than 230 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you are towing within capacity but your transmission fluid exceeds 230 degrees Fahrenheit then I recommend you add a supplemental transmission cooler, the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit part # D13504 with the Derale Snap-In Radiator Adapter Fitting for GM part # D13035 which should keep you within an acceptable range. Even if you are not over 230 degrees Fahrenheit, the above can still be used and will work to help prolong the life of your transmission as the number one killer is excess heat which is a byproduct of towing a trailer. Therefore, if you will be towing frequently then I recommend adding a supplemental transmission cooler.
