Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2006 Chevrolet HHR LS with a Falcon 5250 Tow Bar

Question:

Hi, I have a Falcon 5250 roadmaster tow bar, that came with my motor home. The previous owner left the base plate on his vehicle. I just purchased a 2006 LS HHR to tow behind the MH, and wanted to install a base plate with hidden mounts etc. What do i need, or do you recommend to do. I can fit the baseplate no problem, so just need to know the most cost effective and practical way.

Since you already have a RoadMaster Falcon 5250 tow bar, I would recommend staying with RoadMaster parts, so you do not have to use adapters to make parts compatible.

For your 2006 Chevrolet HHR, the XL Base Plate Kit, # 3141-1, would be correct. This base plate has removable drawbars for the best appearance possible.

Along with the base plate kit you will need a cross bar for the tow bar and a set of car side quick disconnects, if you did not retain them from the previous vehicle. If you need both, you can use the Quick Disconnect Tow Bar Base Assembly, # 910021-00. If you only need the car side quick disconnects, use part # RM-222.

You will also need a set of safety cables, part # RM-643, if you do not have a set already.

Finally you will need to lighting and a supplemental braking system to complete the setup on the HHR.

For lighting, there are several options depending on what will work best for your specific application. I have included a link to an FAQ article that covers the various options, but the bulb and socket wiring kit will not work on the 2006 HHR so do not choose that option. I would recommend the Universal Diode Wiring Kit, # RM-154.

Most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle that is being towed. The easiest to install and use is the Roadmaster Even Brake, # RM-9400. This is a proportional system that applies the brakes in the vehicle being towed in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This reduces wear and tear on both vehicles and is the safest way to stop.

I have also included a link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing for you.

Before flat towing your HHR, you should confirm the towability and pre-tow procedures for your vehicle with your owners manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for towing instructions.
