Recommended Axle for Harbor Freight 4x8 Trailer to Tow with a 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon
Question:
Hi, I would like to use an extra set of wheels from my 2010 Subaru Outback on a Harbor Freight 4x8 trailer. This would let my trailer and car have more/interchangeable spare tire options for extended trips and excursions. Is there an axle available to accommodate those 100mm 5-lug wheels? Is there an electric brake option to pair with this? The tires are 225/60R17. I am also limited on overall width for access gate at home storing trailer. How can I determine overall width from the outer edge of wheels prior to purchase? Should the axle be moved back or forward to improve tracking with the new wheels? It’s a lot. I know you answer HF questions all the time. Thank you for your help. Thank you

The best option that we have to offer are the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension kits. These install directly to your trailer frame and some of them come with electric brakes already installed. I recommend the 3,500 lb Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System # A35RS545E because it should have the proper weight capacity, is does come with electric brakes, and the hub/drums have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern which it sounds like you have for your tires. We only recommend using trailer tires on a trailer because they are made specifically for trailers and they have stronger sidewalls to accommodate the extra weight, but if you plan on using the vehicle tires then you need to make sure the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern is correct. I have attached a helpful article that you can reference for this.
To determine how wide your trailer will be with the tires installed you need to measure out from your frame 6" on both sides of the trailer. This means that your trailer will essentially be about 5' wide altogether when it comes to the wheels.
I have attached a review/install video for the Timbren system and I have also attached an article about axle placement that you can reference as well.
