Is it Safe to Tow 16K GVWR 5th Wheel Trailer with 16K Hitch
Question:
Hi, I have a 16K 5th wheel hitch from our old trailer. We are looking at an new 5th wheel that weighs 12500 dry and gross is 16K will my hitch be okay? We never tow with water and always empty tanks prior to leaving camp ground. Thank you in advance

Strictly speaking, yes, you can tow a 16K trailer with a 16K hitch. We do usually recommend a substantial safety margin so that the hitch is rated for more weight than the trailer's gvwr but since you'll not be loading the trailer to maximum capacity you'll end up with some degree of safety margin. Water is pretty heavy (about 8.3-lbs per gallon) so avoiding full fresh, grey and black water tanks when you're towing will help.
Since your hitch has been in use I recommend that you give it a thorough check to make sure it is not in need of periodic maintenance. If it does need some now is the time to get it taken care of.
If we sell the brand and model of hitch you have you can find the instructions (and recommended maintenance) on our page for that product.
