It sounds like you have two things going on with the Pilot part # 80550. First, your screen sounds like it is inverted by the way that you explain the dot at the bottom and the reverse C. The Pilot is designed so you can invert the screen to mount it upside down if you choose. To flip your screen back to right side up, simply disconnect the black power wire and reconnect it again. I know that you said you have checked the connectors and filed corrosion but if the pins are bent or corroded you may need to replace the whole connector itself. If you give me the year make and model of the vehicle I can help with that as well.
You want to test the pins on the 7-way with a circuit tester. Test the 12V circuit and brake output circuit for power. Also make sure the ground on the trailer connector is properly grounded to a clean bare metal surface. If you get power at the trailer connector then you want to look at the trailer wiring for frayed or damaged wiring.
If you do not get power at the trailer connector, then it's a good idea to check all of the connections of the Pilot. Make sure there are not any loose connections on the back of the controller especially the black power wire. If the brake controller is hardwired, check the red wire that goes to the cold side of the stop light switch for damage or loose connection. Make sure the ground is properly seated on the vehicle's battery stud.
If you check all of the connections of the brake controller and they look okay, you can test the blue wire from the back of the brake controller. Cut the blue brake wire 6 inches behind the controller and test the wire for power while the manual override is applied. The display should show a number value and the test light should illuminate. If you do not have power at the blue brake wire, the Pilot needs to be replaced.
