Troubleshooting Sulfur Smell in 2006 Mercury Mariner
Question:
Why do I get a sulfuric odor in the cabin when driving while AC is running or not?

Expert Reply:
The typical reason a car will smell like sulfur is a bad catalytic converter. When gasoline reaches the catalytic converter, the converter transforms the trace amounts of hydrogen sulfide into the odorless sulfur dioxide. When the converter goes bad it isn't capable of doing this anymore and a rotten egg or sulfur smell is detected.
Most likely you have some check engine lights on currently so your best option is to find a local car parts store to you who can scan for codes to let them figure out which converter is bad.
Once you know which one is bad you can check out the link I attached to see all of the available converters we have. You'll want to select your engine size and then the correct converter location.
