Electric Trailer Brakes for Boat Trailer With 2,000 lb Axles

Question:

I want to add brakes to my boat trailer. It already has the brake flanges. Im attaching pictures of the VIN plate and the wheels. Best I can tell I have 2000lb axles, is that right? So 7 in brakes and drums?

Thanks for the photo and it looks like you do have 2,000 lb axles so you can use Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 7" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 2,000 lbs # 23-47-48 so long as you have a 4-bolt brake mounting flange such as the Brake Mounting Flange for 1-3/4" Round Trailer Axles - 2K # 4-34 as well as a 7" hub and drum like the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 2,000-lb Axles - 7" - 5 on 4-1/2 # 8-257-5UC3.

If you need a new hub and drum assembly you do need to know what bearings your current hub has. You will need to take apart your current hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. The aforementioned Dexter Hub and Drum uses inner and outer bearings # L44649, which is what yours should also be.

To install the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-47-48 you will need Mounting Hardware for 7" Brake Assemblies # BRKH7 and to adjust them you'll need Brake Adjustment Spoon for Drum Brakes # W80630.

To use electric brakes you will also need a breakaway kit like the Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit with Built-In Battery Charger # 20400 and a brake controller such as the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR.

I have added links to some video reviews as well as a link to a help article that details what you need in order to install electric brakes on a trailer.
