Combating Trailer Sway of Raised Chalet XL Pop-Up Towed by Dodge Ram 4x4

Question:

I have a Chalet XLgross weight 3500lbs and TV is a ram 1500 4x4 crew cab with overload springs. The chalet axel has been raised 4 inches for off road. On highway I have noticed more sway .Should I raise tow ball height 4 inches as well and what else should I do to correct this?

Raising the height of the trailer ball so that the trailer was once again level (or as close as possible) would be a good first step to combating trailer sway. I will link you to our FAQ article that describes how to measure to determine the correct ball mount rise or drop to tow the trailer level. Putting as much weight as possible toward the front of the camper will help, as well.

It is possible that raising the ride height of the camper has changed the suspension geometry to the point where it is now causing sway. A friction sway control unit like the # 83660 would be a good next step if raising the coupler height and adding tongue weight does not work. If your ball mount does not already have one, you will need a sway control bracket like part # RP26003. Keep in mind that friction sway controls should be disengaged when backing and should not be used in slick conditions.

For a more severe sway condition, the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution with Sway Control, part # RP66558 would be the next step up in performance. This system includes the weight distributing shank, but the appropriately-sized trailer ball with 1 inch shank would be needed. For a 2 inch ball, use part # 63845.

The best preforming sway control option would be the Reese Dual Cam Sway Control, like that used on the Strait-Line Weight Distribution with Sway Control, part # RP66082. This system literally forces the trailer to stay in line behind the tow vehicle. It will prevent trailer sway before it can start. This system also includes the shank, but the trailer ball is sold separately.

Both systems mentioned above are appropriate for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 200-600 lbs.
