Is a Weight Distribution System Needed for a Forest River Shamrock M-18

Question:

I recently purchased a 2002 Forest River Shamrock M18 to try out the camper life before going all in. It has an unloaded weight of 2480 and somewhere in the low 4000s for GVW. I am attempting to tow with a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan that has a 3600 pound tow capacity because it runs better over distance than my Trailblazer. I will carry propane but no water while towing and dont expect to exceed 3200 pounds. I have a hitch rated for 400 tongue and 4000 total weight. When I was picking up the trailer it had a push/pull feel to it that I believe is referred to as porposing sorry-Im new to this. The rear bumper also seemed to 1-2 inches when I attached trailer. Do I need a WDH? Would air springs suffice? What tongue weight value should I be looking for if I need one? I have searched and searched for answers and my head is spinning. If I upgrade to a WDH can I still use my adjustable ball mount with it? Can the WDH be attached to it or do I need a special WDH mount/shank?

I would absolutely use a weight distribution system when towing the 2001 Forest River Shamrock M-18 with your 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan. The reason for this is because the weight of the trailer is more than half of your tow vehicle's weight which is the rule for weight distribution. The 1-2" of drop you had while coupled may not seem like a big deal but this can really have detrimental effects on braking, stability, and is most likely causing the porpoising feeling you described.

For a weight distribution system, the Husky Center Line Weight Distribution part # HT32216 with the 2" Hitch Ball for Husky Center Line Weight Distribution Systems part # HT33853 is one of the best values on the market. These systems also last a very long time so you can always recoup some of the money when you are done with it. The reason I recommend this route as opposed to airbags or a similar types of enhancement is because the above system has integrated sway control which will help keep your trailer on the road at highway speed when being passed and other events such as crosswinds.

Unfortunately, you would not be bale to reuse your adjustment ball mount with a weight distribution system.
