Can 4 and 5-Way be Used at Same Time for Boat Trailer and LED Light Strip on Adapter # 37385

Question:

I am in need of a 5 way connector for my new boat. My 2009 GMC Sierra has a round 7 way. I have installed and LED light strip under tailgate that plugs into a 4-way adapter behind the 7-way it is a T-connector ed behind the 7-way with a 4-way lead coming off the T. I would like to eliminate the 4-way T-connector and use this item for both the LED lights and the trailer lights. So, can I use this adapter and have the trailer plugged into the 5-way at the same time as the light strip is plugged into the 4 way?

The LED light strip is not going to be using all that much power. However, what I recommend is to determine how much power draw the wiring system on the truck is rated for and compare that to the combined power draw of the trailer lights and light strip to be on the safe side.

Normally, you would not use the 4-Way and 5-Way at the same time. But if the LED light strip has a low enough power draw it should not be a problem.

You will also need to make sure that the 7-Way on the truck is connected to the reverse light circuit so it can engage the electric lockout on the trailer. Use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 if needed to test the center pin. It should show a signal when the vehicle is placed in reverse. Have someone sit in the truck, engage the emergency brake, chock the wheels, and then put the truck in reverse for safety while you test the pin.
