Recommended 3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack for 2007 Lexus RX 350

Question:

Hi we are looking at the Saris Bones 3 Bike Carrier, I see a note that it should be used only for 2 bikes instead of 3. maximum 70lbs. Our 3 bikes together weight only 66lbs, does that make a difference? we have 2 Specialized adult bikes and one Garneau kid bike, do you think that Saris carrier could work with it? Thank you.

The Saris Bones 3 Bike Carrier # SA801BL referenced in your question is confirmed to fit your 2007 Lexus RX 350 but you are correct that it's limited to 2 bikes on this particular vehicle. This actually has less to do with the total weight of 3 bikes and more to do with the additional leverage that's put on the attachment point as weight gets further away from the rear. This is why the 3rd bike can't be used on the Saris Bones when used on your Lexus, as placing weight on the rear most cradles simply causes too much force that might eventually lead to damage.

For a 3-bike trunk rack that can be used to its capacity on your Lexus I highly recommend the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top 3 Bike Rack # HRF2-3 instead. This particular rack has a high-rise frame and uses multiple strap mounting options that securely attach to the vehicle and can safely handle the additional leverage of a 3rd bike. This design will also prevent any damage to your rear spoiler.

I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.

You mentioned having a kid's bike along with a couple of Specialized adult models. If they feature alternative or drop-down frames then you will likely need to add an adapter bar like the Kuat # UB01. The adapter bar will provide a horizontal attachment point for level transport and improved ground clearance.

I have attached a short video review so you can see exactly how it's used and why it might be needed.
