Is It Okay for Trailer Brakes to Slowly Stop When Using the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller

Question:

I just install this brake controller is it normal to have a 4-5sec delay for the electric brake to fully engage? Testing the brake by jacking the trailer n spinning the wheel had my wife apply the brake I could heard the noise from the hub but it take at least 4-5sec to stop the wheel

If the braking action on your trailer is a little delayed when using the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 then there are a few things to look at. The first being the power setting for the P3. The power output can be adjusted using the boost on the right or the power level buttons on the left. Please note that this brake controller is proportional so if your tow vehicle isn't moving then it won't send a whole lot of power back to the trailer. You will want to use the manual override to test the brakes when not in motion.

Should your brakes still be a little weak then you should be able to adjust your trailer brakes with an adjustment spoon # W80630 via the plugs at the back of your brake assembly.

Once you have the controller connected the installation instructions state the following:

1. - Connect trailer to tow vehicle.
2. - With engine running set power (with Power Buttons) to indicate 6.0
3. - Drive tow vehicle and trailer on a dry level paved surface at 25 mph and fully apply Manual Knob.
3A - If trailer brakes lock up: Turn power down using Power Buttons.
3B - If braking was not sufficient: Turn power up using Power Buttons.
4. - Repeat Step (3) until power has been set to a point just below wheel lock up or at a sufficient force as to achieve maximum braking power.
5. - Using the brake pedal, make a few low speed stops to check the power setting. Trailer braking is initiated and terminated via the stoplight switch. When the brake pedal is released, trailer braking will cease.
