We have exactly what you need for your 1997 Ford F-350 so that you can start towing your 40 ft gooseneck trailer. According to page 184 of the online version of your owner's manual it states that you can calculate your max trailer weight by subtracting the weight of the loaded towing vehicle (including any passengers and cargo) from the GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) of your F-350. Your GCWR rating can be found on a sticker located in the door jamb of your driver's door.

For a gooseneck hitch I highly recommend the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch w/ Custom Installation Kit # BWGNRK1100. This will fit your pickup whether you have overload springs (2 holes will need to be drilled into the frame) or not. Please note that if you have a cab and chassis model with the 34 inch frame there are no gooseneck trailer hitches for your vehicle.

The B&W gooseneck hitch is made right here in the USA and features a hitch ball that can be turned upside down and stored inside the hitch receiver for a completely clear bed when you aren't towing. B&W has the Extended Latch Pin Handle # BWGNXA1800 so that you can easily secure and release the hitch ball, a 4" Offset Ball # BWGNXA4085 for extra clearance, and the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400 if you ever need to tow a 5th wheel trailer.

You can also add the Bargman # 50-97-410 wiring kit so that you have a 7-Way connector in the bed of your F-350 which makes connecting and disconnecting your gooseneck trailer wiring much easier.

I have attached some videos that you can check out.
