2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4x4 Base Plate Recommendation and Other Flat Towing Parts

Question:

Looking at roadmaster 3101-1 tow plates the look like they are perfect because the 131s are not. My problem with the 3101-1 is it says 1500hd but I have a 2500HD 4 x 4. Will the 3101-1work ok?

We do have a base plate fit for your 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 HD 4x4 but the Roadmaster Base Plate Kit part # 3101-1 is not a fit. In order to get the correct fit the 2001 GMC Sierra you have to measure from the lower-most threaded hole on the side of the frame to the center of the elongated hole on the bottom of the frame. I have attached a diagram for your reference.

If that measurement is 1-1/4 inches then you need Roadmaster Base Plate part # 131-17. If the measurement is 3 inches then you need Roadmaster Base Plate part # 131-15.

I recommend using a Demco Base Plate kit part # DM9517101. Demco does not require a specific measurement to fit the 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 HD and if your tow bar is a Roadmaster tow bar, there is an adapter available to use the two parts together. I have listed the tow bars and the corresponding adapters available to use a Demco Base Plate kit below.

Roadmaster Eagle and Eagle 8000- part # DM9523014
Roadmaster Falcon 5250- part # DM9523023
Roadmaster Tracker, Falcon 2, Falcon All Terrain, Blackhawk, Blackhawk All Terrain, and Sterling tow bars with serial numbers up to 14,500- part # DM9523036
Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain and Sterling tow bars with serial numbers above 14,501- part # DM9523062

If you do not already have a tow bar, I recommend a Demco Tow bar part # DM9511013. If you get the Demco base plate the use of an adapter is not needed with the Demco tow bar.

If you need wiring, I recommend Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit part # HM56101. The Hopkins wiring harness plugs into the tail lights on the Sierra so it is an easier install compared to the other wiring kits that require splicing into the wiring.

If you need a supplemental braking system, I recommend the Stay-IN-Play DUO part # SM99251 in the motor home has hydraulic brakes. The Stay-IN-Play DUO is a one time set-up braking systems that depresses the towed vehicle's brake pedal with a pressurized cylinder while being towed. If the motor home has air brakes, you need the Air Force One Braking system part # SM99243 which is the same concept but for air brakes.

You may need a high low adapter to tow the truck level with the motor home. I have attached a link of the high low adapters we offer.
