Wheel Size Limit on Dexter Trailer Axle
Question:
The specs for this axle/hub combo say you can run 8inch or 10inch wheels. What is the reason for the 10inch limit? Is it a limitation of the hub design? I see the combo with specs for 12inch to 15inch seems to have a different hub design. If I have 10inch wheels now and purchase this, but want 13inch in the future, would that require a swap of just the hubs, or the axle too?

The Dexter Axle part # 20545I-ST-60-10 is a 2,000 lb axle made for lighter trailers that traditionally use 8 or 10 inch wheels. The hubs that come with the axle are idler hubs for trailers without brakes with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and a part # L44649 for inner and outer bearing.
The 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and L44649 bearing is common for 12 and 13 inch size wheels so you can upgrade your wheels, tires and hubs in the future if you have the clearance on the trailer to do so. The larger hubs include the drums because they are made for trailers with electric brakes. You would not need to change the axle.
