Is Supplemental Braking System Really Needed to Flat Tow 2008 Honda Fit

Question:

I have a 2016, 24 foot Gulfstream Conquest Class C. Do I really need to add supplemental brakes when my car only weighs 2500 pounds. Most states require portable braking on vehicles over 3000 pounds. Also, I live in Tulsa Oklahoma, can you recommend an authorized facility to do the whole plate, tow bar and if needed additional braking install? Thank You,

Even if a supplemental braking system is not legally required - and it varies by state so you should contact your local authorities for a definitive answer - it is an extremely good idea that is strongly recommended because it will increase the safety of yourself and other drivers as well as reduce the amount of wear on both your Gulfstream and 2008 Honda Fit.

A supplemental system is an expense, but it is well worth it in the long run. There are other parts you can get which will reduce the overall expense to help make up for that of the braking system.

Here are the parts I recommend for your 2008 Honda Fit:

- Base Plate Kit: Demco Classic Base Plate Kit # DM9517215
- Tow Bar: Demco Excali-Bar III Non-Binding Tow Bar # DM9511013
- Wiring Kit: Magnetic Tow Lights # RM-2120
- Supplemental Braking System: Roadmaster InvisiBrake Supplemental Braking System # RM-8700

Base plates are vehicle-specific and the Demco Classic are a fit for your '08 Honda Fit and give your car a clean look.

The Excali-Bar tow bar is a great option because it has long arms which make it easier to maneuver when towing, along with integrated safety cables and an adjustable, tilting head so a high-low adapter won't be needed. Having these features on a tow bar means you won't have to purchase them separately, saving you additional expenses.

The MaxxTow Magnetic Tow Lights are another way to save on expenses and plug into your Gulfstream's 4-way. If your motorhome has a 7-way instead you can simply use the Pollak 7 Pole to 4 Way Connector Adapter # PK12716 to use these lights.

The Invisibrake is a great option because it is a one-time install so you will not have to continually attach and detach it.

As far as facilities we are not associated with any type of installers or shops so we can't give you a reliable recommendation on that. A certified mechanic should be able to do this type of job and I recommend reaching out to some local shops and inquiring about whether or not they have this type of experience.

I have also added links to some video reviews for you to take a look at.
