Replacing Leaf Springs on Boat Trailer Where Suspension is Bottoming Out
Question:
Just bought a boat and trailer. Last person just put springs on trailer and I think they are incorrect. They flatten out and bang when towing boat. Old trailer so not much information on replacement parts. How do I measure trailer to get correct spring length for a two axle, double eye spring suspension? He said they are 1000 lbs. springs and the GVW of the boat alone is 3800 lbs. I want to get 1500 lbs. springs with the correct lenght and arch. Any help would be greatly appreciate.

The most important factor for picking out replacement leaf springs for your trailer is to first go with the correct weight capacity and then secondly the correct length. If your boat weighs 3,800 lbs alone you'll need much higher rated springs. When you consider the weight of your trailer a 5,000 lb spring like the part # e28SR might be a great option. It has a very common length too of 25-1/4 inches. To measure your spring you'll want to get the length between the eyes when there isn't a load on it. Keep in mind old springs tend to stretch slightly.
Going with the correct length is important, but in a worst case scenario you could always move your hangers to accomodate a different length spring. If you need a different capacity spring I also attached a link to a page that has all of the springs we carry as well.
