How to Pick Out Ball Mount for 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500

Question:

Im looking to get a hitch mount for my silverado single cab 4x4 my truck already has a trailer hitch, and one of my questions is how do I know what receiver size is my hitch? I need to tow a single car trailer, with a Camaro overthere so total weight is around 5,000 Lbs. What class and total weight should I buy my hitch ball? I guess that should be something around 7,5000lbs? the truck is ratted to tow around 9,500lbs total, so I want to buy the better suited mount/ball as possible. PS. trailer hitch is the OE as came from the factory. Thanks

You'll want to first determine the hitch ball size you need. On the coupler you should see a size listed near where the ball inserts into it. Most likely it will be 2-5/16 inch due to the weight of your trailer but it could also possibly be 2 inch.

I attached an FAQ that details how to pick out the correct ball mount. Picking out the correct ball mount will allow your trailer to sit as level as possible. Basically you will first measure the height from the ground to the top of the receiver opening on the hitch while on level ground. Next, you will measure the coupler height from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler when the trailer is on level ground.

Next, you will need to compute the difference. If the hitch height is greater than the coupler height the difference is the drop required. If the coupler height is greater the difference is the rise required. You will want to pick the ball mount with the rise/drop closest to the difference.
