For your 2010 Subaru Forester, I recommend the Roadmaster XL, # 921-1 (for 2.5X and 2.5X Premium models with manual transmission only). These base plates are compatible with the Falcon 2 tow bar. If your Forester has an automatic transmission it must be towed on a trailer (all wheels off the ground). be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual for additional information on the proper procedure for towing the vehicle.
If you determine that you can flat tow the vehicle, in addition to the tow bar and base plates, you will also need safety chains, like # RM-643. The coiled design of these cables helps keep them off of the ground.
You will also need a lighting solution. Depending on how often you will be towing the vehicle and your specific needs, there are several different options to choose from. I have included a link to an FAQ article that covers the options to help you choose what will work best for you.
Most states now require the use of a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the proportional and portable Even Brake, # RM-9400. This system applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.
I have also included a link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing.
