Recommended Weight Distribution System for Trailer Tongue Weight that Ranges From 800-1500 lbs

Question:

Have a f-350 SRW tounge weight of trailer is about 800 lbs Sometimes when i tow the trailer we take 2 ATVs on a sled deck on the truck. one of the ATVs sits behind the rear axle. This along with cooler and generator would add about 600-700 lbs behind the axle what would you reccommend?

For best performance, when choosing a weight distribution system you should choose a system based on the tongue weight of the trailer as it is typically loaded. Anything stowed in the tow vehicle behind the rear axle should be included in the tongue weight figure. I've linked an FAQ article that explains how to determine your trailer's as-towed tongue weight.

With such a wide range between the two scenarios you mention, using a system like part # RP66131 which has a effective tongue weight capacity range of 800-1500 lbs is going to be your best bet. This will cover you at the high and low end of the spectrum.

Going with a lower-rated system would not be advisable, as overloading the spring bars can damage the system. It is better to have a bit more capacity than needed than not enough.

If trailer sway has been a problem, the Reese Friction Sway Control you mentioned, part # 83660 will help. Loading your trailer so that the majority of the weight is above or forward of the trailer axle is also crucial in minimizing sway. The weight distribution system I recommend is also available as the Strait-Line system, part # RP66130, which uses the Reese Dual-Cam sway control. Rather than resisting and reducing sway like the friction unit does, the Strait-Line stops it dead in its tracks. No exaggeration.

The systems I recommended require a weight distributing shank like, part # RP54970 and the appropriate trailer ball for your coupler, like part # C40085.

I have provided links to the products I recommended, as well as links to instructions and an FAQ page with more information about weight distribution systems.
