Tips for Identifying 4-Way Wiring Colors that Use Non-Standard Colors
Question:
My Dodge 4 wire from the vehicle has black, red, Yellow and green wires, the 4 wire from the trailer has brown, white, yellow and green. I know to connect the yellow and green and that the white is ground also the brown is trailer lights but how does the red and black connect to the brown and white. The black from the truck is larger than the other wires. Thanks

Your Dakota uses non-standard wire colors for the 4-way so your best option is going to be to test all of the the wires while applying the various taillight functions of your vehicle to verify you have the correct function of them all. For that you'd want a circuit tester like # PTW2993. I attached a video link to this page that shows how to do this as well.
That said. MOST LIKELY the black wire is the ground since you said it's thicker than the other wires.
