Troubleshooting New Self Adjusting Trailer Brakes Where Only Isnt Working Well Enough
Question:
Ive just replaced all 4 of my 2005 Montanas electric brake assemblies upgrading them to self adjusting in the process. One of them is not working. Ive read that it doesnt matter how the wires are connected as long as the brake gets power the brake will work. Can having the wires reversed result in the brake not working? Im thinking yes but figured Id ask before crawling back under there. And a yes will also mean I dont really have to lift the axle and spin the wheel, just reverse the wires.

Expert Reply:
Trailer brake assembly magnets are not polarity sensitive. They can have either wire as the power or the ground. Most likely since the self-adjusting assemblies are new you have one that just needs a few more applications to tighten itself properly so that it will activate like normal. Every time you hit the brakes of your trailer the adjustment wheel clicks tighter if needed till it's the right tightness. One of the assemblies just might be more out of adjustment than the others.
