Question:
I have an f350/ 08. With a factory installed actuator with a numerical reference on the display. How do I determine the correct setting on the actuator to engage optimum amount of braking between truck and trailer

With your 2008 Ford F-350 factory integrated brake controller, you will use the positive button to increase the braking gain sent to the trailer brakes. This is a proportional brake controller so it will send that amount of braking power to your trailer brake assemblies in proportion to your truck braking pressure, so you can use the manual override lever if you need more braking sooner than your controller output gives as max gain.
Your trailer brake assemblies like # AKEBRK-35 will need to be manually adjusted from time to time as the brake shoes wear down for maximum braking. You may want to consider self adjusting assemblies like # AKEBRK-35-SA if you want to ensure correct adjustment without the need to manually maintain them.
The factory controllers are simply not as good as aftermarket controllers, so if you aren't getting your desired function, you may want to consider upgrading to an aftermarket option with more adjustability and better internal components. If you don't want to worry about rewiring anything, you can simply use the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller - Wireless - 1 to 2 Axles # C51180 which will take priority over your factory system and allow you to adjust settings using the mobile app.
