How To Wire a 4-Way On a Motorcycle Trailer With a 6-Way

Question:

I have a 09 Honda Goldwing with a California side car trike kit on it, the trailer has no brakes it has a six wire connection and I was trying to hook up a flat four wire connection for more led lights, couldn’t get it to work thinking it was a bad plug I cut it off stupid so I’am obviously going to need a new plug and is there anyway to tap the new four pin into it or should I just forget about it ? I’ll try to get the pictures on! Your help is very much appreciated! Thanks

It sounds like you have a 6-way trailer connector on your motorcycle trailer and you want to replace it with a 4-way trailer connector. If that is the case then I do have options for you but I would need to know exactly what powered circuits you have on your trailer. If you were to use a 4-way trailer connector like the one you have pictured then you could only retain left stop/turn lights, right stop/turn lights, and running lights.

In order to wire the new 4-way onto the trailer you would need to find out which wires are for which of the above functions as color matching is not the correct procedure. The correct procedure would be to apply 12 volt power to each wire to see which circuit it activates. Once you know which wire is for which circuit you can then attach it to the 4-way you have. The metal pin with a rubber sleeve to the far left is for the ground and working your way to the right side the functions are running lights, left turn/stop, and right turn/stop.
