Will a Cushioned Pin Box Or Dual Jaw 5th Wheel Hitch Do More To Reduce Chucking/Jarring
Question:
My truck has a old style slide bar fifth wheel hitch and I get chucking and rough ride sometimes.Which of the two solutions would help the most.A new 5th wheel hitch with clamp jaws or a new cushioned type pin box. What are the pros and cons for each solution Thank you

The best solution for you would be to replace both the slide bar 5th wheel hitch with one that has dual locking jaws and the standard pin box for one with a built-in cushion. However, if the budget you have does not allow for this then the best option for you would be a new cushioned pin box. The best option we have for this is the Trailair Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box.
The reason that the Trailair Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box is going to be your best option is because it will help with both chucking and jarring. The airbag with integrated shock will help to reduce the up and down movement (jarring) and the pivoting head will help to reduce the back and forth movement (chucking). If you were to upgrade to a new dual locking jaw 5th wheel hitch then that would only really help to reduce chucking.
In order to determine which Trailair Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box is correct for you, we will need to know what wing set your trailer uses. It should say what wing set you have on the pin box sticker but if not you can call the trailer manufacturer. The most common wing set is a Lippert 1621 and if this is what you have then the correct replacement is the Trailair Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box part # LC328492 which is rated for 18,000 lbs.
In the future if you decide you would like to upgrade to a dual locking jaw 5th wheel hitch then I recommend the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16140. The A20 actually has interlocking 1" think dual locking jaws which will do more for chucking than most standard dual jaw systems. It also has a one pin head removal system which makes removing and installing the hitch manageable for one person.
I have attached review videos for you as well.
