Why Do Gooseneck Hitches Have Higher Capacities than Fifth Wheel Setups

Question:

A straight hide a way goose neck shows a towing weight of 30,000 lbs but with the Companion it shows only 20,000 lbs. Please explain why the difference?

Expert Reply:

Gooseneck hitches have a simpler design which allows them to have higher capacities easily. That is why the B and W Turnoverball part # BWGNRK1313 has a capacity of 30k and the Companion hitches that fit the hitch are lower capacity like the # BWRVK3500 which has a capacity of 20k. Also most RVs with fifth wheel pin boxes aren't super heavy unlike some cargo trailers that use gooseneck hitches. So the hitch manufacturers don't go out of their way to overbuild the hitches and increase cost for a feature that's not normally used.
