How Much Can a 2016 Dodge Durango R/T Tow

Question:

Hello, I have a 2016 Dodge Durango RT, 5.7L Hemi, with AWD. It does not come with a factory tow package. I am looking to install a tow package through the dealership, in order to tow my 5000lb travel trailer. The dealership says it can handle up to 7200lbs. I however have reservations with it not having a transmission intercooler, the proper suspension for towing of any of the other specific equipment. Are they right? By adding a hitch, wiring assembly and a trailer brake be enough? Or should I consider another option?

According to the owner's manual for your 2016 Dodge Durango R/T, this vehicle has a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 lbs. It may not have a factory trailer hitch or wiring harness but I am almost certain you have a supplemental transmission cooler of some kind which more than likely came standard on the R/T trim package. Therefore, you will not need to install any additional coolers to safely tow at maximum capacity.

In order to complete your towing setup I recommend using the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180. The Echo is a relatively new brake controller that is gaining a lot of popularity. The reason for this is because it does not require any modifications to the tow vehicle, it just plugs into the 7-way and you use your phone to customize settings and activate the manual override. The other major reason as to the growing popularity of this brake controller is because it uses a device you are already comfortable using (your phone), you do not need to read an entire comprehensive manual and familiarize yourself with the controls and codes to use it. Please note that if your phone loses power the brake controller will still function as normal.

I have attached a review video of the Cut Echo for you.
