Question:

I want to install a Reese 15000 lb fifth wheel hitch in my 2006 Chevrolet K1500 HD 4X4 with a six and a half foot box, My trailer is a 2010 Keystone Outback 282 FE with the extended pin. Will this work and where do Iocate the hitch from the back of the cab, or in front of the axle. Thank you for any help you can offer.

The Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit, part # RP50064-58, will fit your 2006 Chevrolet K1500 HD with the 6-1/2 foot bed. With the 6-1/2 foot bed you will need to use a fifth wheel hitch that is a slider hitch. A slider hitch will move 10 to 12 inches to the rear of the truck bed and give you the additional turning clearance that is needed between the truck cab and the trailer loft when the vehicle is making tight turns.

The Reese base rails will position the hitch center line 1-1/2 inches in front of the axle center line of the vehicle. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the Reese # RP50064-58 kit that will show where the kit will be located on your truck bed.

For a slider hitch I would recommend the Reese 5th Wheel 16K Trailer Hitch with Round Tube Slider, part # RP30075. This is a round tube slider hitch that moves 12 inches to the rear. A minimum 13 inch extended pin box is recommended when using this slider hitch.

I am including a link to a FAQ page on fifth wheel information and a video link to the Reese # RP50064-58 Kit being installed on a 2004 Chevrolet 2500 HD.
