What is Towing Capacity of 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 When Using Weight Distribution

Question:

Hello - I have 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 truck, 2WD. I have read many good things about the Equilizer Weight Distribution system and am considering it. In my manual, it states that for a weight-carrying hitch the max tongue weight capacity is 700lb. I assume this to mean that you hook up a trailer or boat and the max tongue weight for the truck is 700lb. The manual also states that the capacity increases to 1200lb if a weight distributing type hitch is used. I assume this to mean that a WD hitch such as the Equilizer i am considering. Is this how you understand this? I’ve tried reaching out to GMC and can’t seem to get a response. Thanks -

Your assumption is absolutely correct. Your truck has two sets of weight capacities. One set for if you are not using a weight distribution system and another set that is higher for if you are using a weight distribution system.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

The Equal-i-Zer kit part # EQ37120ET has a tongue weight range of 800-1,200 lbs which would work great with your truck's tongue weight capacities.
