so according to a comment by a rep on another similar product, this one is capable of using a 3/8inch chain midpoint through the hole?

Correct, the Brophy Banjo Eye part # BE38 is designed to be used with 3/8" diameter safety chain. We also offer this banjo eye for a 5/16" diameter safety chain, part # BE31. The plates are both 3-1/2" long x 3-5/8" wide x 5/16" thick. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.
