Recommended Tire Chains for P245/60R18 Tires on 2018 Ford Explorer
Question:
Our 2018 Explorer has P245/60R18 tires. Can we use chains? We cannot get a straight answer from our dealership. Our old car could not use chains because it had large tires and there was not enough room. Something like that. Can you give us the plain truth so we can do what is safe and not cause problems?

Ford says that the 2018 Explorer can use tire chains on the front tires IF the car has the tire size P245/60R18. It also states that only low-profile S-Class chains with no more than a 10mm clearance requirement should be used. This is noted on page 325 of the online owner's manual but I do suggest checking your printed manual in case it differs from the online version.
We do have tire chains that meet these specific requirements. These chains appear on the linked page.
The particular chains I recommend are the Konig Low-Pro Diamond Pattern chains # TH04115250. These chains will be easier to install than any others and they include features you will quickly come to appreciate once you use them, such as automatic chain tension control, nylon bumpers that provide protection from scratches for your rims and a quick-release feature that lets you get the chains off quite easily.
These quality tire chains are made in Italy (where winter driving on mountainous roads is serious business) and they feature manganese-nickel alloy steel construction for durability. They include a durable nylon storage bag that unzips into a kneeling mat. Installation instructions are printed right on the storage bag so they cannot get lost. The Low-Pros are backed by a 5-Year warranty, which is almost unheard of in the world of tire chains. They are not cheap, but then again, you get what you pay for.
The Low-Pro chains install as shown in the linked diagram. With just a few simple steps you will have these chains installed on your front tires and enjoy enhanced traction during winter driving.
As with any tire chain, always remove the chains when you reach clear pavement and never drive faster than 30-mph with chains installed.
