Depending on which motor your 1996 Ford Explorer is equipped with will depend on how many and which catalytic converters you will need.

If you have the V6 4.0 liter motor, you will need to replace the the front and rear converter. For this we have the MagnaFlow Stainless Steel Catalytic Converter, part # MF23313, (49 state approved) which is a direct fit replacement.

If you have the V8 5.0 liter motor, you will need to replace a total of 4 catalytic converters. For the driver side front, you will need MagnaFlow Stainless Steel Catalytic Converter # MF23311. For the passenger front, you will need # MF23312. Then, for the rear assembly, which includes 2 converters, we have the MagnaFlow Stainless Steel Catalytic Converters, part # MF23310. These converters are 49-state legal converters, and are not legal in California.

You would need to replace all the o2 sensors that are bad. It is recommended to replace the sensors when replacing the converters.

The installation of the direct-fit converters is a bolt-in application, and really depends on how easy the old converters come out and how comfortable you are working on cars. I would recommend using some penetrating oil like PB blaster to soak on the bolts a few hours before installation.

I have linked an FAQ article on catalytic converters.
