Weight Distribution for 5,000 lb Trailer and Brake Controller Recommendation 2012 Chevy Silverado

Question:

I have a 2012 Silverado hybrid 1500. It is a crew cab, 4wd and has a 6.0 vortex. Will this be safe to bumper pull a 30ft camper with estimated weight of 5,000 lbs? Which weight distribution hitch would you recommend. I have electric brakes on one axle, and will have a brake controller put on truck.

I looked up the towing capacity of your 2012 Silverado 1500 with a 6.0 that is Flex Fuel compatible and it looks like it has a capacity of 10,200 lbs so a 5,000 lb camper would be no problem at all.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

The tongue weight range for the Reese part # RP66560 that you referenced is 600 to 1200 lbs which should be just right for the tongue weight of a 5,000 lb trailer like what you have.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes. This will be the last brake controller you buy. It can easily be transferred to future vehicles as well. I attached an install video for this controller in a 2012 Silverado just like yours for you to check out as well.
