Platform Style Hitch Bike Rack for 2017 Toyota Tacoma
Question:
I noticed at a local store that had Yakima and Thule platform racks on display. The Thule platform was at least 6inch higher. I like the lower height because of back issues. What rack would you recommend? My wifes bike does have fenders. Also, with any of these racks, when bikes arent loaded, will I be able to lower my tailgate all of the way. Thank you

There is a specific Thule hitch bike rack that I recommend for you but it is not their Doubletrack platform rack # TH92BJ. Based on what you told us I think I have a much better option for you.
The EasyFold # TH903202 includes a number of special features that for you may make its higher price entirely justifiable. The Easy-Fold has a built-in ramp for loading the bikes so you never have to lift their weight, and the ramp stores in the rack so it can go with you. The Easy-Fold also has a foot release tilt mechanism that makes it easy to tilt the rack down for vehicle access, although whether or not your tailgate can lower fully depends on the specific bikes so I cannot guarantee that.
The EasyFold handles even heavy bikes, like the increasingly popular electric bikes, up to 65-lbs each. I also accepts tires up to 3-inches wide and it works fine on bikes with fenders since it secures the bikes by their frame tubes or seat posts rather than their tires. It also folds up to a very compact size and has built in wheels to make it easy to move the rack around the garage. It also fits both 1-1/4-inch and 2-inch hitches and it includes an anti-rattle device and locks.
I realize this rack is twice the price of the Doubletrack but I do urge you to check out the video I linked that will show you all that you get with this carrier.
As far as bike rack height goes, that works both ways. Taller racks will mean having to lift a bike higher for loading but they also give you better ground clearance to avoid the rack scraping on a driveway entrance, for instance.
