Yakima SkyBox NX 16 vs Thule Motion XT L Cargo Boxes for 2016 Audi Q5 and Future SUV

Question:

Hello. I currently drive a 2016 Audi Q5 2.0T with the factory side rails and cross bars. I like the Yakima 16 Sky Box and the Thule XT L. The issue is I will be getting a new car next year and want to make sure the box will fit. I am looking into getting either a 2019 Subaru Forester Touring or a 2019 Mazda CX 5. Can you advise if either of these cargo boxes will fit these cars with our without the factory roof rails/cross bars? Thanks for your help - hoping to get a box for holiday travel this year!

Both the Yakima SkyBox NX 16 # Y07335 and the Thule Motion XT L # TH629706 are excellent options that look great, feature dual side access, and give you 16 cu ft of extra cargo space.

I recommend going with the Motion XT L though because it allows you to install it on your 2016 Audi Q5, a 2019 Subaru Forester, or a 2019 Mazda CX-5 no matter what kind of roof options (with side rails or without side rails) you choose.

The SkyBox will fit all 3 vehicles and allow you to open up the rear hatch without interference, even if you get the 2019 Mazda CX-9 the roof rack for that option only has 48" of front bar to rear hatch space and the SkyBox only needs 47" so you are still good.

I have attached photos showing the clearance needed for both the SkyBox and the Motion XT L for you to check out. Please note that the SkyBox weighs 48 lbs while the Motion XT weighs in at 42 lbs. You need to take this into consideration along with the weight ratings of your roof rack/vehicle roof and your cargo to make sure you don't overload anything.
