Troubleshooting Atwood Air Command Heat Pump Function

Question:

This is to notify you there is a problem with the fan running continuously in the A/C mode....the compressor comes on and off as needed........In HP mode the fan will cycle on and off every 5 seconds after the thermostat reaches the set temperature. It is so annoying I just get up and shut the unit off....

The Atwood Air Command Rooftop RV Air Conditioner w/ Heat Pump # AT15028-22 or the non-ducted #AT15026-21 should allow air to all parts of the vent. If there is air flowing to all parts of the vent, then the filter is catching what it needs to. The vent baffle/duct will be on one side of the assembly as you can see in the video so it is not uncommon for one side to see more dust and debris than the other. If you are not getting air to all parts of the vent, then I do recommend checking the connections.

The Replacement Air Filters for Air Command Rooftop RV Air Conditioners - Qty 1 # AT15066 are what you need for a replacement.

I just bought my LV with Atwood air command systems installed in my ceiling. One of them skips the heating mode as I toggle the mode button to change from air to dry to heat to fan. It lights up air then dry skips heat and goes to fan. I’m wondering if there is a way to troubleshoot this to make it heat? I have it set at the max temperature and it is only about 50 degrees outside.

I reached out to my contact at Atwood/Dometic, and he said to first be sure that your particular model has an integrated heat pump. If so, the issue could be that it's just not cold enough yet. The heat pump won't be functional until the ambient temperature is below 45 degrees, at which point you should be able to select it as an option. Let me know if you continue to have issues.

Will this heat pump put out heat if the ambient out door temp is between 60-65 degrees?

The heat pump will put out heat if the outdoor temp is as low as 45 degrees F. At temperatures lower than that, the compressor cannot convert the exterior air to warm air. Just remember that your thermostat will only have a setting between 60-85 degrees F and under most temperatures will only feel like air blowing versus hot air blowing at the vent, but will still take the chill out of the air. A heat pump is not a furnace that will effectively heat a trailer, but will make it warmer inside the trailer than the ambient outdoor temperature.

The fan running in the manner you are stating sounds like there is an issue so I reached out to the manufacturer. Their tech stated that the Air Command unit will constantly run the fan in AC mode so that is normal. On the heat pump end they said something slightly different than we've been told in the past. They said the ambient temperature for that unit needs to be between 32 and 50 degrees for the unit to function and it has setting restricting function if outside that temp range. So, they said if it is over 50 degrees outside, the unit will not function and will cut out, like it sounds is happening as it is cycling on and off for you.
