The Prodigy brake controllers, like the P3 # 90195, a great controllers and have been extremely popular for quite some time. They perform well, can be installed at any vertical angle, and often have an install adapter to make them plug and play (part # 3041-P for your 2018 Toyota 4Runner). They're a go-to and we recommend them for anybody without hesitation.
With that being said there are some controllers that are easier and less invasive to install that are gaining popularity. One of which is the Curt Echo, part # C51180. The Echo is simple. You download an app on your smartphone, plug the Echo into your 4Runner's 7-way trailer connector, pair them up via bluetooth and you're good to go. The app on your phone acts as the in-cab controller.
I recently had the chance to play with the Echo and it's super convenient and easy to setup . As long as the tow vehicle has a 7-way connector with a live 12 volt circuit you're good to go.
