How Do the Proximity Sensors on the Furrion Electric Fireplace Work

Question:

How exactly do the proximity sensors work. There are some complaints about them falsely shutting down the heat out put and flashing the red light? Cameras? Air flow? What might cause false detections?

The proximity sensors on the Furrion 34" Electric Fireplace part # FF34SW15ABL are ultrasonic/electromagnetic in that they use wavelengths to detect the proximity of nearby objects. This is a similar technology to that of the reverse sensors in your car.

I spoke to Furrion and they informed me that they are aware of two potential causes for false detection. The first one is on the new Grand Design trailers in which part of the mantle was blocking the sensor and causing it to go into a protection mode. The fix for this is to cut the wire mesh around the eye to open it up more.

The other issue is the motor overheating which will have the same error sequence as the proximity sensors. This is usually caused by using the fireplace as your main source of heat which is not its intended purpose. It is intended to be a supplement to the furnace in the trailer according to the manufacturer.

The manual states "The LED log and flame display can be turned on separately from the heat function." For more information on this product on our product page.
