Snow Traction Device Installation on 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

I have a 2014 subaru outback, I know I cannot use chains. I purchased auto socks which I think will work great crossing over the passes. I need to know which works better, placing on front tires or rear tires. thanks

All aftermarket traction devices, whether actual tire chains or the tire sock type, are subject to the recommendations of the auto maker. Generally the drive wheels are the ones that will benefit the most. You may care to review the linked article for more information on use of traction devices.

The owner's manual for the 2014 Outback (pages 8-11 and 8-12) says to install low-profile S Class traction devices only, and then only on the front tires. Some chains are rated as S Class. Make sure the socks you have are made to fit your specific tire size. Your Outback comes with two stock tire sizes, 16-inch and 17-inch, shown on the linked page. You can click on your tire size to see the traction devices made to fit each size.

Do your best to keep your speed to 30-mph and to avoid sudden braking and turning that could cause the car to skid. It is best to remove the traction devices as soon as you reach clear pavement.
