Changing the Wheel and Tire on Coachman Camping Trailer to ST205/75R14 Tires

Question:

I have 2002 Coachmen camper trailer. GVWR= 5860 lbs Dual or combined axel weight rating= 5440 lbs Each axel GAWR= 2720 lbs Current tires = Dynatrail ST175/80R13 Max Load1360 lbs/50psi load range C wheels are 5 on 4 and 1/2” pattern. Lug centric I would like to put larger tires on this camper to gain some height under the trailer. We have scraped tongue jack, spring bars and back bumper on occasions. I know larger tires will not increase my GVWR but any additional load range that might come with larger tires as a safety margine would be nice. Can you recommend a tire for us if possible.

Expert Reply:

For your 2002 Coachmen Camper trailer, I recommend the Provider ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 14" Vesper White Mod Wheel # TA82MR.

This will give you an outer diameter of 26.14 inches compared to the 24.1 inch diameter of 175/80R13 tires. This will raise your trailer about 1 inch in ground clearance but it also will increase the tire width by about 1-1/2 inches giving you 3/4 inch less clearance on the inside sidewall from the trailer frame. Moving up one tire size is not uncommon, but anything more than that can interfere with the movement of your trailer suspension.
