Why Don't All Aftermarket Brake Controllers Work with 2018 Ram 1500
Question:
I have the Tekonsha PowerTrac Electronic Brake Controller - 1 and I purchased the plug and play harness. When I press the brake on my truck it does not activate. I can manually activate the controller.

The issue is the wiring of your 2018 Ram 1500. Starting in 2013 the 2013 Ram 1500 utilizes multiplex wiring that is different from previous models. Although the brake control connector is physically the same as the 2010-2012, the wire functions have changed. The terminal that used to be the stop light signal now has battery voltage whenever the ignition is in the run position. This means only certain brake controllers can interpret the brake signal and function properly. Unfortunately the PowerTrac is not one of the compatible controllers so you'll have to upgrade.
I'd recommend the P2 part # 90885 which is a proportional brake controller that will sense the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and will apply a proportional amount of trailer braking. The install harness part # 3024-P is the correct harness for this controller too and your 2018 Ram 1500.
