What is the 5th Wheel Towing Capacity of a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab 4x4

Question:

Im looking to buy a 5th wheel travel trailer. Trailer UVW is 13,200lbs GVWR is 16,800lbs and average hitch weight is 2750lbs. If I add an air ride system will my truck be able to safely handle the load and not cause issues down the road?

For starters, the towing capacity of your 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD cannot be increased even with a set of airbags like the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2709. The airbag are going to improve the ride quality while towing and take some of the wear off of the factory suspension components but they will not increase towing capacity.

According to my research, your 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab 4x4 has a 5th wheel/gooseneck towing capacity of 13,500 lb if it has the short bed (6-1/2') and 12,400 lbs if it has the long bed (8'). I would first check that these figures are accurate by calling the dealer with your VIN.

If these figures are accurate then it would appear the trailer you are looking to buy may be a bit more than your truck is rated to tow so I cannot recommend you do so. If you are able to find a trailer that is under the maximum towing capacity of your Silverado then I would love to recommend a towing setup for you but in order to do so I would need to know your bed size in addition to whether or not you have the factory prep package.
