Compatibility of Thule Canyon XT with Extension on 2017 VW Passat

Question:

Hello, I have a 2017 passat and I wanted to buy the Thule Canyon XT I also was considering the extension piece however I am not sure if the extension would be supported properly. I have a 23” bar space at this time and I could possibly make it 24” do you recommend the XT with the extension or only the standard basket no extension for my set up. Thank you!

The Thule Canyon XT Roof Cargo Basket - Steel - 49" x 40" x 6" - 150 lbs # TH859XT will be a nice fit on your 2017 VW Passat. That doesn't mean you can't use the Thule Canyon XT with extension # TH859XT-8591XT, but it will give you an overhang which is only an appearance issue not a function issue.

The extension does not fit directly in the middle, but is actually toward the front so when added is well supported by the crossbars. I've attached a photo to assist.

The crossbar spread can be as little as 20 inches apart whether you use the extension or not to properly support the roof basket.
