Where Should King Pin Sit in the Bed of a 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 for 5th Wheel Towing
Question:
I would like to know where the king pin should be on a 97 dodge 2500, with the Cummins 6BT engine. I am thinking to use a universal rail system and a hitch capable of 18-20k. Your thoughts on Kingpin placement and suggested products would be appreciated.

Typically the king pin will be located directly above, or slightly forward of the rear axle on any given pickup. If you were to install a universal base rail kit like the Reese # RP30035 on your 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 the (linked) instructions state that the king pin will be about 2" forward of the axle center. I have attached a picture of the instructions that show where you would install the base rails in relation to your truck bed.
I recommend going with the Reese single-jaw 5th wheel hitch that is rated for 20K. This gives you the max amount of towing capacity that you are looking for while offering a comfortable ride via the 4-way pivoting head and the jaw that provides complete contact with the king pin. If you have an 8' bed you want the stationary version which is part # RP30928 on our site.
If you have a 6-1/2' bed then I recommend going with a slider style hitch like the # C16541.
You also may want to install a 7-Way in the bed of your pickup with part # C56001 to ease the connecting of your wiring from your 5th wheel hitch.
