Can Bike Rack be Mounted to Towing Bumper on 1999 Ford Explorer

Question:

Hi, The 1999 Ford Explorer Sport has a towing bumper. It accommodates a ball that is attached through a hole in the middle of the bumper. Can this arrangement be used to attach this or any other of your bike racks? Thanks

Hi!

While we do have bike rack options that will work for your 1999 Ford Explorer there are none that will attach directly to your towing bumper. If you wanted to use a hitch-mounted rack like the Thule Doubletrack Pro XT # TH92BJ you referenced you would need a trailer hitch like the Draw-Tite # 75096.

If you did not want to add a hitch to your Explorer I recommend checking out a trunk-mounted bike rack. A great option that will fit your '99 Explorer is the Saris Bones # SA805BL which is a 2-bike carrier that has a weight capacity of 35 lbs per bike and has anti-sway straps to ensure your bikes remain stable on the rack.

Just keep in mind that that when using any hanging rack like the Saris Bones # SA805BL you'll need bike frame adapter bar # SA3040 if your bike is dual-suspension, has a step-through frame or you want to carry a small children's bike. The bar will give those bikes a horizontal mounting point so they can be carried by the rack.
