Is the Thule Helium Aero Pro Compatibile with 45 Pound Bike?
Question:
Hi there- The Thule Helium Aero says that each bike should not exceed 35 lbs. I understand total weight restrictions, and I understand why you would not want to load a heavy bike farther out on the arms. But why is there a per-bike limit? For example, if I load a 45lb cargo bike and a 16 lb road bike, Im well below the racks limit and the limit for even a class one hitch. What issue does this present? Thanks

The Thule Helium Aero Pro Bike Rack # TH9042PRO has the same 35 lb per bike restriction you stated from the manufacturer. This is due to the torque put on the rack itself with the arm support for hanging style functions. I don't understand all the physics of why this is the requirement, but the manufacturer warranty is void if you were to put a bike over the 35 lbs on the rack and it were to fail. All the hanging style racks from all the manufacturers have this same 35 lb limit.
My recommendation for your 45 lb bike is a platform style rack to fit within the manufacturer restrictions. For instance, the Swagman Chinook 2 Bike Platform Rack # S64683 which is also Class I hitch compatible and rated for up to 45 lbs per bike. I've attached a video of this rack to assist.
