Why Use an RV Refrigerator Over a Standard Refrigerator

Question:

As I look at the noted RV listed compact 110v refrigerators, I find myself wondering what the difference is between these units and a similar sized, 110 volt, similarly priced unit I can buy down at the big box store, typically used in dorm rooms, etc. Is there a difference between an RV marketed compact refrigerator and units not specifically marketed in RV circles? I ask in the context of our review of these units over the years and consideration for purchase. One of the caveats of the built-in RV refrigerator is the time it takes to get it cooled down ready to use it is for this reason that we turn ours on, running on electric 110v at the beginning of the season parked in the drive, and it stays on, whether on 110v when parked or on gas when moving, for the rest of the season. One of the reasons we have not spent the money on a compact frig RV marketed or not is that we would be constantly powering this thing on when camping and off when not, and dealing with the cooling cycles when in between power sources. Any more information on these units and comparisons with standard compact units would be much appreciated. Have a great day. Thanks for the insight over the years! Best Regards,

There are differences between an RV refrigerator like the Furrion Refrigerator part # FCR43ACA-BL and a standard one you would find at your local appliance store. They may not be noticeable just by looking but there are in fact key differences.

The most important difference is the built-in vibration dampening. The RV refrigerators have much sturdier internals which are designed for more abuse because they go over bumps all day long in your RV. A standard refrigerator would work for awhile but over time the internal components would loosen and eventually fail much quicker than an RV refrigerator.

The other major difference is the interior coating. The RV refrigerators are made so that they don't lose the cold air as quickly. This is because with an RV refrigerator you can expect power outages much more frequently than that of your home. The frequent power outages not only means you lose the cold air quicker but it is also harder on the electric components which standard refrigerators are not used to therefore won't last as long.
