Catalytic Converters for a 2000 Ford Explorer Limited with 5.0 Motor
Question:
My explorer would bog and wouldnt get any hp it wouldnt go over 50 mph. So i hook a OBD 2 to it. The code read P0171 bank 1 and P0174 bank 2 02 censors where running lean. When i removed them they where lean but the car still wouldnt run right. I put the censors back on and rev the engine the cats got red hot and started a fire due to trans leak. So i diconnected the exhaust before the cats and it still doesnt run. What should i do.

Without the O2 sensors in place the 2000 Ford Explorer would run poorly. You would need new ones if the old ones are shot. But one of my coworkers stated that the catalytic converter(s) likely have a clog which would cause the system to run too rich and ignite the fuel that is being dumped into the exhaust. So more than likely you will need to replace the catalytic converters.
So it definitely sounds like you need new O2 sensors and new catalytic converters. It could be that the heat damaged something else and that is why it won't currently run. If you put all the exhaust back together and still have issues then the last resort would be to have a Ford technician look at.
You can get new direct fit 48 state (excludes California and New York) converters for your Explorer using # MF93107 for the left side and # MF93106 for the right side.
